Hi, I’m Mrs. Stio
For 15 years I taught math in the classroom, 14 of them in Diocese of Arlington schools. I spent nine years at Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School teaching Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus, five years at Queen of Apostles teaching grades 6–8 and Algebra 1, and a year at Ad Fontes Academy teaching Latin and Algebra 1.
I know diocesan math curriculum from the inside. Ten years ago I served on the Diocesan Math Curriculum Committee that reviewed and rewrote the standards currently used across our schools. I also spent two years on the Algebra 1 Exemption Exam committee — the test students take to place out of the course entirely.
That means when your student is struggling with something in their classroom, I know exactly what they're supposed to know, why it matters for what comes next, and where the gaps usually form.
I teach differently than most tutors. I use visuals, storytelling, and memory techniques like chants to help students build real understanding — not just memorize steps that don't stick. When a student can explain why a process works, not just how to do it, that's when the confidence starts to build.
I also have extensive experience working with students of all abilities, including those with learning differences and disabilities. I know how to adjust pacing, presentation, and approach so every student can access the material in a way that works for them. If your student is struggling, frustrated, or starting to believe they just aren't a math person, I'd love to talk.
"Mrs. Stio has known my family for several years now and has made a tremendous impact on the math skills of both my daughter when she was in high school and my son who is currently in the 4th grade. Mrs. Stio really knows what she's doing and teaches math skills that kids actually enjoy and can lean back on when they get to higher levels. I would definitely recommend Stiometry to any family that is looking to instill a strong core for math in their children through an enjoyable and rewarding experience!"
